Kitchen Verandah @ Open House ll

A place to dry food, to sun dish towels and for the cats to sit and look at the dogs

The Kitchen Verandah is part of a house project which we completed several years earlier. We take on these micro-projects so that we can continue our relationship, and design conversations with the client. We use such projects to train the young designers in our studio about design development into a built project, which they can then include in their portfolios.

The louvre panels are held in position by simple latches

Design development drawing show the two links between the two kitchens; one practical and direct, the other more poetic and up to one’s interpretation

The main idea was to relocate the wet kitchen into a ‘galley’ space facing the garden, these kitchens are connected via a sliding window in between them, and the new kitchen verandah.

The design takes on the spirit of ‘selang’ in a Malay kampong house, which is a flexible space allowing people to socialize spontaneously

The Verandah is a semi permeable space to rest in between cooking, to drop the groceries after returning from shopping, a place to dry food, to sun dish towels and for the cats to sit and look at the dogs.

The ceiling is constructed from similar material, and share the same rhythm as the louvre panels

The ‘flip-flop’ louvre panels are constructed out of steel and aluminium sections, with a simple latch to adjust the degree of open-ness. It is simple yet effective, allowing the users to control the spaces.
