This is an example of how several local architects from different firms in Kuching combined their efforts to design, consult, coordinate, and build a house for four families using volunteer labour. The house was completed and handed over to home owners on Saturday, October 6th, 2012.
As the initiator of this project, we worked with Design Network Architects to formulate the design of a simple house with shared facilities for the four families. We believe that in sharing the dining room and kitchen, they will also share other less tangible aspects of life such as childcare, security, and fellowship. The shared facilities also lowered the cost of construction when compared to the original ‘row-house’ design.
When design options were being considered, the team worked to obtain pledges of material and products from local companies. We also coordinated the volunteer labour from The Boys’ Brigade and architecture students, later a group of volunteers from Japan arrived to help as part of the Habitat for Humanity Global Village.
