On the 22nd of March 2025 (Saturday), Huang Sheng-Yuan of Fieldoffice Architects (黃聲遠 + 田中央工作群) will conduct a design lecture entitled ‘As Free as the Grass Grows (和野草一樣的自由)’ at Swinburne Sarawak (Lecture Theatre). He will talk about his projects and practice in Yilan, a regional city in Taiwan, and discuss the significance of building while being rooted in the local community, with local architects and students. Fieldoffice Architects was founded in 1994, starting as a small studio that grew into a large atelier as clients and staff members found resonance with Huang’s philosophies and vision.
Huang was born in Taipei in 1963. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Tunghai University in Taiwan, before proceeding to Yale University for his Master’s degree. He worked with Eric Owen Moss Architects and also taught at North Carolina State University before returning to Taiwan.
Members of the community are welcomed to attend this public design free of charge by registering via Eventbrite.
This lecture is a fringe event from the Borneo Eco Show (BES) 2025, a local initiative that aims to provide a dynamic platform for networking and raising awareness about the environment, design, and technology relevant to the Borneo region. BES2025 is supported by Business Event Sarawak, Swinburne Sarawak, Green Building Index, and the local chapter of the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAMSC).
In May (9-11th), BES2025 will be organising a Design Festival comprising a Design Forum featuring foreign and local speakers, a Trade Expo, and other community outreach programmes such as urban installations, etc., culminating with the BESTRIDE Run on the 11th of May 2025. The run has 3 km, 7 km, and 15 km (competitive) categories. It is now open for registration via CheckPointSpot.
