Marking Out

The Playhouse is physically an expression of the minimal numbers and sizes of timber being placed together in order to mark out a habitable space.

Plan of the Playhouse

Before the desirous act to possess a space by building a structure around it, space never arises. It merely is. And this unconscious space is the void. Psychological man is lost when confronted by this void, even the vastness void of nature.

This marking out is a simple exercise. It is a tremendous exercise. It is an exercise to overcome the first step. It is an exercise to separate and to connect, to form and to un-form. Nature is ordered by the intellect of man. Timber, as it is being used, is nature in the order of man.

The material of nature (timber) is used to connect with nature. Man draws within him the form of order --- Geometry. Through Geometry, the void of nature is ordered. The unconscious space is awakened. Space becomes.

By detailing, the space which now stands between man and nature is familiarized. It has become material space. It is now habitable.

Nevertheless, the material space has not forgotten its beginning. The Playhouse is a story of and a witness to the space’s origin, when space is yet becoming.
