Sekolah Kerajaan Tudan Jaya
Sekolah Kerajaan Tudan Jaya, Miri is a school for primary students and their teachers to experience a ‘fresh’ perspective from conventional school designs built by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia. It is strategically located along Jalan Tudan, with the SJK(C) Chung Hua Tudan and Kompleks Anak Yatim with residential enclaves nearby.
The main design components of this project are:
4 four-storey Academic and Administration blocks
A single-storey canteen
A single-storey Pra Sekolah
A football field, a sepak takraw court and a netball court
Government schools are usually designed as linear 3-4 storey blocks to fulfill the necessary space requirements. A courtyard is also a commonly used planning element for schools as they serve as a gathering space while keeping the rooms cool during daytime.
This scheme breaks away from the conventional rectilinear configuration, and used a rhombic plan with its long sides facing north-south. This elongates the building footprint which creates a different perspective while offering more surface areas to 'catch' breezes and improve ventilation.
The architecture is a playful mix of simple and exaggerated forms, expressed through its structure and engineering. Colours are then added to contrast and delineate the different functions of each block and space. There are other design features that were planned but not completed within this project; hopefully, they can be implemented as the school grows and matures.
