Temperamental in nature, pop-up shops need to be built or dismantled within a specific time constraint, appealing to both young and old alike

Two years before the pandemic, we were commissioned to design a 25 m2 pop-up outlet for a confectionery shop. The site is in a popular shopping mall in Kuching. Pop-up shops are often temperamental in nature, as they need to be built or dismantled within a very short time frame. The design also had to be adjusted to suit different spaces and scenarios; prefabricated, easily transported and assembled on site. The shop had to appeal to both young and old customers.

Inspired by JENGA blocks, the display racks are designed to be stacked and arranged in a ‘open-work’ pattern to display a variety of chocolate brands

We needed to showcase 32 brands of chocolate and 500 different products of different shapes and sizes. Inspired by my children’s JENGA blocks, we designed display racks which could be stacked and arranged in an ‘open-work’ pattern.

Using pre-drilled holes with nuts-and-bolts, we secured the modular ‘building blocks’ and powder coated them in vibrant colours to create a joyful atmosphere

After a few prototypes, we settled on 1.5 mm steel sheets that were folded into three types of modular rectangular boxes. These ‘building blocks’ are secured using pre-drilled holes with nuts-and-bolts, and powder coated in vibrant colours.
